SHRO: excellence in scientific research
SHRO is a nonprofit research organization committed to supporting excellence in scientific research in the fields of regenerative medicine, oncology, and chronic diseases. Our goal is to improve the quality of life through scientific innovation and the discovery of new therapies.Our Mission
La Nostra Missione SHRO is dedicated to supporting scientific research aimed at finding cures for cancer, cardiovascular disease and other diseases by identifying the underlying molecular mechanisms. SHRO includes the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine, located at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and an affiliated laboratory at the University of Siena, IT. More than 200 molecular biologists, geneticists, physicists and chemists collaborate with SHRO to develop new methods of understanding, diagnosing and treating disease.
Our Story
In 1993, Antonio Giordano, M.D., Ph.D., founded the Sbarro Health Research Organization Institute thanks to a generous donation from Mario Sbarro, the founder of the Sbarro restaurant chain. Giordano discovered the tumor suppressor gene pRb2 and the cell cycle genes CDK9 and CDK10.
When Giordano moved to Temple University in 2002, he and 20 scientists formed a new three-year alliance with Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Under this agreement, the original Sbarro Institute was renamed the Sbarro Health Research Organization, Inc. (SHRO), which includes Temple’s Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine and the Sbarro-affiliated laboratory at the University of Siena in Italy
SHRO Italia Foundation ETS
SHRO Italia Foundation ETS, established in June 2023, represents the Italian division of the international research organization SHRO (Sbarro Health Research Organization). As a non-profit organization, SHRO Italia is committed to the promotion of scientific research, innovation in the fields of regenerative medicine and the training of new young physicians.
Goals and mission
SHRO Italia is dedicated to the support and development of scientific research with the goal of finding new therapies for complex diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions. The organization focuses on identifying the molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases, with the intent of developing innovative and personalized treatments.
The SHRO Italia team is composed of a group of highly qualified and passionate researchers, scientists and physicians. The team's expertise and enthusiasm are critical to achieving the organization's goals.
SHRO Italia firmly believes that collaboration is the key to scientific progress.
We work side by side with academic institutions, healthcare organizations, and biotechnology companies to accelerate the discovery and dissemination of new therapies. These global partnerships enable SHRO Italia to share knowledge, resources and technologies, fostering a dynamic and innovative research environment.
The Headquarter
The headquarters of the SHRO Italia Foundation is located in Candiolo, in the province of Turin, within the Polo Tecnologico Piemontese. 
This modern 12,000 square meter facility offers state-of-the-art spaces for scientific research and clinical trials. The strategic location and advanced infrastructure allow SHRO Italia to conduct high-quality research and collaborate effectively with other centers of excellence.
